Members' News for the Month of March

Hello out there!  It's the last Weds of the month, so we all know what that means, right?  Yep, it's time for the Etsy Metal members' news.  Here's an update of our comings and goings for the month of March, and our special accomplishments.

Betsy Bensen is featured in Combustus online magazine entitled "Betsy Bensen and the Alchemy of Making Jewelry".  Congrats to Betsy whose work is amazing!

Meg Auth will be exhibiting a piece entitled "X Marks the Spot" in the
Mercury Bay Art Escape
Taste of the Tour
Showcase Exhibition for the month of March
At Hot Waves Cafe in Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel in New Zealand.
This event kicks of an Open Studio Tour that takes place March 2,3,9, and 10.

Colleen Baran’s 'Blue Chain' is showing in Chain Project exhibiting at A Casa Museum in São Paulo, Brazil. 'Blue Chain' was made from layers of heavyweight paper cut into organic shapes and painted in gradient shades of blue. It explores some of her favoured recurrent themes of pattern and repetition using alternative materials.

The exhibition runs from February 20th to March 22nd in 2013. The show was curated by Marina Sheetikoff and includes 65 artists from 20 different countries.
Congrats to Colleen,  I have seen this project on Crafthaus and it is amazing!  Do check it out.

Alisa Miller was featured in American Craft Magazine in the Voices column. Her brooch was also prominently featured.

Here is a bit of text from article-

What does your living space say about you?
My apartment is a little peek into my brain. A little messy and chaotic, full of stuff I really don’t need but also surrounded by pretty things. I love my collection of art. Nearly all of it is from friends of mine or artists I have admired for a long time. I have glass and ceramics from craft show friends, drawings from artists I have followed for years, and, of course, jewelry from some of my idols.
~Alisa Miller, metalsmith, Chicago

Wow!  Lots of cool stuff from our Etsy Metal team.
Searching for "etsymetal team" (no space between etsy metal!) is one way to search for our team members when shopping or looking on Etsy.  Etsy Metal is one way of assuring that you will find quality metal work.

Til next month,
Sue

Project Runway Season 11 Episode 3–“IT'S THE HEIDI KLUM CHALLENGE. DUN DUN DUNNNNN”

Season 11, Episode 3: IT'S THE HEIDI KLUM CHALLENGE. DUN DUN DUNNNNN
Challenge due Thursday, February 14 (midnight your time) Happy Valentine's Day!
Unknown-3
Heidi goes on to tell the designers that as a team, they'll be designing garments for the launch of her "very feminine and sensual" scent, "Surprise." Each team will be responsible for designing four garments for her "Surprise" TV and print ad, and two looks for a press event. After all a woman needs options, right? Or to put it in Heidi terms: "I'm a little picky"
Translation: Create a piece of jewelry for Heidi based on the design of her perfume bottle.
Make it work!

We have amazing 2 entries for this challenge!
L. Sue Szabo

“make a piece to go with Heidi Klum's perfume Surprise. I used pink enamel like the color of the box, using strips of metal to echo the striping on the box, adding black spinels to bring in the black accents. It came out looking a bit more organic than i planned.”

Our next challenge:
Season 11, Episode 4 :  “The Ultimate Hard and Soft”
Challenge due Thursday, February 21 (midnight your time):
This week’s challenge is a FLASHBACK CHALLENGE! Inspired by the Glade 2-in-1 scented candles, the designers will be sourcing their materials from BOTH a flower shop AND the hardware store! It’s a 2 in 1 challenge to make a cohesive line of 6 looks of “hard and soft”. The line needs to contain both flowers and hardware, but EACH look does not!
Translation: I think this one was made just for us! Design a piece of jewelry that has elements of hard AND soft... include something you'd find in a hardware store with something organic, either something like a real flower or metal that looks organic.

**Guidelines for Guest Submissions**
Please read this every week as there may be small updates and changes. The pieces you submit must be pieces that are made specifically for that week's challenge. Then post a link to your challenge creation in this week's comment area before the deadline.

Then Please cross-post this to your Blog, Flickr, Etsy, etc. and tag them with "EMPR 10.3" We will post your name with a link and a picture of your piece on our blog.
