oxidized two leaves pendant
Up next for our Member Feature is Alisa Miller, a Chicago based metal artist who creates amazing work reminiscent of cellular structures and inspired by nature.
1. Where do you live? Where are you from?
i grew up in seattle, wa, but moved to chicago, il 5 years ago.
oxidized branch earrings
2. How did you get started working with metal?
i got a job at a jewelry supply store. i was just beading then. i took a class at pratt fine arts center and fell in love with the medium. i was going to the university of washington anyway and changed my major to metals. that was 8 years ago!
3. What are a few of your favorite pieces at the moment?
my favorite pieces right now aren't on etsy. :-( so i'll tell you my favorite pieces on and off.
off etsy:
bubbles necklace
renaissance necklace
on etsy:
cellular series--peanut
bubble hoops
i made myself a pair of these hoops and i wear them almost everyday. which is wierd. i usually grow bored of wearing the same thing after a week or two.
4. What inspires you?
i'm influenced mostly by nature, like 95% of other artists. :-) although, living in chicago, most of the nature i see is through pictures. not too much around here. i really love honeycombs and strange pods and cellular structures. on a larger scale i'm totally inspired by other artists. some of my favorite non-jewelers are lee bontecou, do-ho suh, and kiki smith.
5. Do you have any other artistic interests?
i would love to branch out and create installation sized work. or just larger sculpture. but right now jewelry takes up most of my time. although i am certainly not complaining...
