Ask Auntie EM: How do I size up a ring?

It's been a terribly long time since Auntie EM did a tutorial and we are very sorry.  If you knew what our lives have been like the last few years...you'd go easy on us.  We have missed posting and I, Ann, had an opportunity to size a ring and thought, "Why not do a tutorial!?"  So here I am..after a long hiatus.  It's good to be back, even if I can't make it a regular occasion.  So, let's get after some ring sizing!

My friend, who shall go nameless, says that this method of sizing a ring isn't necessary now that solders are so good.  I respectfully disagree.  I love this method for sizing a ring up.  It's super fast, really easy and, best of all, it holds itself in place while you solder.  It's called a dovetail joint and you'll need any kind of cutters (flush, semi flush or not flush at all) and stock that matches kind of closely the stock your ring is made.   You will also need:
*dividers
*a ring mandrel
*a jewelers saw
*a small triangular file
*all the junk you need to solder something

Step one is finding an original solder seam.  Sometimes you can find the seam, sometimes you can't.  If you can't, you'll have to just guess and pray the shank doesn't fall apart when you heat it, always a good time.  Use a big, bushy flame and evenly heat the piece gently until the ring turns brown.  Just as the ring turns brown, the solder seam should show up and a bright silver line.  If the ring is gold, it'll be a gold line.  Here is an example:
Once you have found the solder seam, you'll want to cut on either side of the seam with a flush cutter...but here's the trick...you want to use the NON FLUSH side to make the cut.  Usually, you want the end to be nice and flat but for this method, you want to use the opposite side of the cutters to make a pointed set of ends.  Like this:

I didn't do any filing to these, I just cut them with a pair of flush cutters.  These flush cutters.  Next, you want to make the piece that will fit in the slot you have created.  You will need your dividers for this step. Slide your cut ring on your mandrel up to where you want the new size to be.  For me, this is a 5 1/2 (except my mandrel is off, so it's a 5 1/4).  Take your dividers and measure from where your mitered cuts start.  Like this:
can you see that I'm up where the bevel starts?  So, take this measurement and now transfer it to your prerounded sizing stock like this:
I have a ring bender but you could just as easily hammer your stock over a mandrel.  Make sure it's prerounded or this whole technique won't work.
Next, you will cut with the flush side of your cutters at your scribed line.  Your next step will be to make a cut with your saw blade on each side of this piece.  Like this:
Can you see that?  it's a terrible picture, sorry.  You want to go no deeper than the depth of the saw blade.  I used a 2/0 I think.  Do this to both sides of this tiny piece.  Go ahead...I'll wait.
Once this is done, you will take your triangular file and run it along this saw cut.  Trust me, don't skip the saw step...it's fast and it makes a difference.  Run the triangular file a couple of times along the cut...don't go nuts...just a couple of passes.  It should look like this:

Again, sorry for the bad pictures.  So, now you have this tiny piece and it's time to fit it into place.  What you want to remember here is that you want it fit so there is enough tension to hold it in...but not so much that when you heat it, it flips out.  Again, trust me, you REALLY don't want it to flip out of there.  It will look like this:
BOOM!  It fits great, doesn't it?  And it was SO EASY!  Now all you have to do is suck solder in there and you're golden!  it will look like this after you solder:
Only...take my advice...pickle the ring after you find the solder seam in step #1.  I didn't and had some pitting in the solder that I had to clean out and fix.  No biggie.  But if I had pickled the ring, that might not have happened.
I was in a hurry to finish this ring and took a million quick pictures of all the clean up and polish but...they sucked so I'm not going to use them.  And I think you can handle it from here.  Even with taking the photos, this took less than 15 minutes.  It's so easy.  If you have any questions, please leave them in comments below.
I hope this is helpful!
Good luck!

ETSYMETAL Jewelry Challenge: Project Runway Season 13.2 REVEAL "Unconventional Movie Challenge"

Welcome to the reveal of last weeks' Episode 2

"The Unconventional Movie Challenge"

The Project Runway challenge: When an afternoon of fun at a local movie theatre turns into a challenge, designers will have to show their innovative side to create a fashionable look out of unconventional materials they find in the theater and a film set.

The EtsyMetal Translation: We asked our EtsyMetal team members to create a piece of jewelry using similar materials that were used on the runway  (film, paper, straws, zip ties, cd's or letters) or use a movie theme or item to inspire.

And here are our 6 team members and our 1 guest submission reveal!

Anna says, "I used zip ties, straws, letters, and compact discs. I fused the straws and compact discs between tin foil using a hot cast iron pan then I sawed out the shapes. These fabulously tacky shoulder duster earrings were inspired by the winning teams colors and the 80's movie "Desperately Seeking Susan" starring Madonna!

Shannon Conrad "Golden Popcorn Ring"
Shannon says, "For this piece I had the crazy idea of trying to cast a piece of popcorn because what good is a movie without snacks? Sterling Silver, Bronze."
Michele says, "I went with the "electrical/movie theater lighting" theme. I used duct tape and electrical wire left over from some home renovations. Both were items used in making the dresses in the winning collection. I made a rose bracelet to go with my favorite dress from that collection.... and I went with a rose because of my rose collection in my metal jewelry."

Jessica says, "I used material I had around the studio that was also included in the challenge. I used colored straws for the majority of the piece. I didn't have movie letters but made some sequins out of transparency sheets and added touches of black with a sharpie."

Evelyn says, "Of course, I had to go with letters. Also inspired by the movie - Jean Michel Basquiat, Radiant Child - and the artist, Paul Klee. I used 'A to Z' - letters pierced out of copper, torch-fired enamels with alphabet decals. They are big, 2" wide x 2.5" long"

"I'm happy I was able to make a piece this week, barely but just in the nick of time! I LOVE popcorn! Not the microwave stuff mind you, but the pan popped style. SO when the opening scene of this episode began there was a bucket of popcorn, and right there I knew what my muse was going to be ;)
Shrink plastic, Prismacolors, Brass clasp, 23" length."

NEXT WEEK!

Episode 3:
"Welcome to the Future!"

"Project Runway" Season 13, Episode 3  Air Date: 08/07/14.

In this episode, the Project Runway designers were asked to integrate the past, present, and future in their creations and they were challenged to get inspiration from Marie Claire magazines from 1994, 20 years ago, to create looks they think will be relevant 20 years in the future.

So for the EtsyMetal Translation:
IF you were making jewelry in 1994, revisit one of your own creations and update it for 20 years in our future, 2034!
Or, make a piece that is inspired by your life in 1994 and modify it for the future 2034!

Charm Swap 14 update....

Hi All! I'm back again this week with LOTS of charm swap news! All the charms are to be shipped and received by Sept 30 which will be here before we know it so I'm glad to see so many participants are hard at work!

First this week we have some photos from Shannon of RubyGirl . Shannon says: "We made the mold and shot waxes today. I am going to cast one flask tomorrow to see how they look."

How cute are these little hammers! So adorable! ...

We also have an update from Anna of SeverinMetals. Anna created a "master" charm and sent photos of her before and after. You can see all the pieces in the second photo before she attached them all together to create her charm.

I think your "master" charm turned out great Anna! Keep up the good work!

I also have an update from Meg of SimplyMega. Meg sent us a sketch of what she's got planned for her charm. I can't wait to see what she does with it! will it be silver? Copper? Brass? all of the above? we can only wait and see!

Sue from LSueSzabo says" I finally have decided on my charms. I am making tiny UFOs. just getting started tonight so no pics yet, but I'm excited about it." Can't wait to see what Sue comes up with!

Debbie of FentonDesign sends us this photo:

Debbie says: "It is said that a journey begins with a single step....well...here's mine! Summer is proving to be ridiculously busy but soon, oh so soon, I will post my final result. Stay tuned!" Hmmmm....I wonder what could this be??? I guess you will have to keep checking back for updates to see what Debbie will be making!

From Leslie with  ZLeslieJewelry:
"I'm working on my prototype. Here is the original sketch along with the copper base layer and the silver upper layer. I want to shape the silver a little more before I rivet the layers together.

I'll be adding a little 4mm carnelian to each one too."

And last but not least we have Betsy from BetsyBensen who sends us this photo and says: "Yipee! My 18 gauge fine silver arrived today and I can start sawing!"

So many works in progress this week! Looks like I need to get moving on my charms! Maybe by next week I'll have something to show....Until next time! ~Michele
